Are We Like the Wolves? By Our Mentor Mom- Janis Cox

In Haliburton where we live, there is a wolf centre located in the Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve.

When we visited there a couple of years ago, I learned much about wolves; their pack nature; pecking order; how strength dominates every facet of their existence.

This made me think about humans and we live.

Are we any different than wolves?

  • In sports we celebrate winning, competition is everything.
  • In school we celebrate achievement, being on top.
  • Beauty – in how we look, fashion, fitness, and body image.
  • Even in our churches – preaching, conferences

The preaching of today is apt to emphasize strength of will, beauty of character – the things easily noticed (Oswald Chambers, August 21).

But is this what Jesus had in mind? I don’t think so.

We always know when Jesus is at work because He produces in the commonplace something that is inspiring (Oswald Chambers, August 21).

Jesus likes the “unnoticed”. That is hard in a world that praises winning, getting ahead, self-reliance and power. There are shelves full of self-help books; how to get ahead; and do it yourself. Where are the books they say – be like Jesus?

Jesus wants us to let Him lead, let His strength show – and to realize that to be weak is okay. We don’t have to be like the wolves.

Jesus would rather us be like sheep. Sheep follow the shepherd.

Know that the Lord is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture (
Psalm 100:3, NIV).

Are you following Him or the world?
